Preview: Kambing FC has struggled in the league this season but will attempt to forget its woes there and enjoy a good cup run starting with this Group J tie against FC Tempastella. We can draw experience from last season's cup game where we played Huat FC and came close to upsetting our higher-division opponents after twice taking the lead before eventually succumbing 2-3. In a short tournament, anything can happen.

I intend for our formation to remain largely unchanged with Calvin, Shafi and Bay, who returns in goal, starting in place of Amin (d), Helmi and myself. Hopefully the familiarity, which saw us starting the game well against Samalongkok last week, may inspire us to another good start and make a good step up by producing that final spark in the final third of the pitch.

Much depends on our playmaker, Muhammad, who assisted both goals in the Huat FC match, to provide that spark, while Huang will lead the attack. Amin and Farhan, who scored the equalizer last week for his first league goal of the season, will hopefully provide the ammunition we need from the flanks. Azman and Azhari, senior stalwarts of KFC, would be called upon to assist Muhammad and our wingers as much as possible. In defence, Rashid and Calvin are commanding defenders who would hopefully get better with each game they played together, as was intended before the league began this season. Rashid has yet to confirm he is playing, though, so Amin (d) or myself would be alternative options. Our flying full-backs would likely be challenged again and Bay is likely to be tested in goal. On the bench, we have useful options with Omar and Kelvin, who is topscorer in the league for KFC with two goals, while captain Rahman will likely be restored in central midfield in the absence of Shahreen.

No matter what happens though, I am sure KFC would give our opponents a good run for their money.

Today was KFC’s first match in this season’s D2D league cup. A new system has been implemented whereby teams are divided into groups of three for round robin matches, and the top 2 teams from each group will qualify for the knock-out stages. The match today saw KFC up against FC Tempastella, a team sitting in 4th position in the 2nd division.

KFC started with a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Bay, Imran and Shafi making returns to the team. KFC also welcomed a newcomer in Zaki, who would go on to have a competent debut. Bay was back as keeper, while Helmi, Imran, Calvin and Rashid made up the back four. Amin, Azman, Azhari and Shafi formed the midfield quartet Muhammad was tasked with providing the final passes to KFC’s striker, Huang. Instructions were passed down for the team to start in the same way as it did in the previous week against Samalongkok. However, Tempas opened the scoring even before KFC could really get into the game. KFC’s defence were caught out by the swift passing of Tempas attackers as Imran was drawn out of position to provide back-up for Rashid on the left hand side. A Tempas player took full advantage of the situation by swinging a cross into KFC’s penalty area, where Calvin was badly outnumbered by 3 Tempas players. Calvin managed to get to the ball first but was seemingly pushed in the back by an opponent which was unseen by the referee. The impact of the push was big enough to cause Calvin to lose his balance, thus he only managed to deflect the ball into his own goal instead of making the intended clearance.

Rather than let their heads drop, KFC started the match with renewed vigour. The centre midfielders were finding Amin free on a number of occasions down the left flank, but the latter’s runs were somewhat wasted as his crosses and shots were rather weak, probably due to fatigue, as Amin explained later. Helmi was also combining well with Shafi on the right flank, and the former provided a cross for the latter who connected well. But the Tempas keeper was up to the task as he made a superb reflex save with his leg, denying Shafi a goal which he fully deserves. Not long after one of KFC’s attacks resulted in a corner on the right side. The corner, taken by Muhammad eluded the keeper and fell to Rashid/Imran for an easy tap in. But the referee provided the match with its first controversy as he ruled it out for infringement on Tempas keeper. KFC’s keeper Bay was struck by the injury jinx again midway through the half as he was going for the ball after a penalty miss by Tempas. While going for the ball, a Tempas played barged Bay in the back, causing his injury proned left shoulder to be dislocated again. Though it was managed to be fit back into the socket, his left hand was too weak for him to continue in the game and Akim duly donned the keeper jersey to replace Bay. The match was becoming more open as both sides were bent on playing attacking football. Farhan was seeing lots of the ball down the left flank but his crosses were mostly missed by Kelvin who had came on to replace Huang. However, KFC was soon able to fashion an equaliser via a superb piece of teamplay. A cross field pass by Farhan found Helmi maurading down the right flank and his pass was picked up by Azhari, who coolly side-stepped the keeper to roll the ball into an empty net. Zaki was having a eventful and busy debut, displaying good control and tenacity to fend off Tempas’ right winger. KFC ended the half on a low note as a corner by Tempas was not cleared fully and a Tempas player was able to score with a shot from just inside the penalty area.

The second half began with KFC pushing for the equalizer but to no avail. As fate would have it, Tempas were the next to score. An attack down KFC’s left side saw the loose ball cleared by Amin(big). Kelvin was too slow to get to the clearance in time as Tempas no.4 sneaked in to curl a superb shot past Akim. After the third goal, Tempas seemed to take their foot off the pedal as they were content to sit back and stroke the ball around, waiting for the opportunity to strike. This provided KFC with much more possession as Azhari, Muhammad and Rahman looked to free Farhan and Helmi down the flanks at every chance. This tactic created many openings for KFC but Kelvin’s inability to time his runs meant the many through balls came to naught as he was caught offside repeatedly. Kelvin’s miserable performance was summed up by two more misses, one with an open goal gaping before he was replaced by Huang.

The substitution brought about a revival in KFC’s fortunes. Tempas left winger was injured while tussling for the ball with Zaki, though no fault of the latter, and it left Tempas playing with 9 men. KFC smelt blood and began exploiting the gaps in Tempas’ defence. Farhan pulled a goal back to make the score 3-2 by displaying great determination to chase a seemingly lost cause before slotting home under the keeper. Muhammad then leveled the scores from the penalty spot. The penalty was earned by Farhan after he was impeded in the penalty area following a corner from Azman. Though many might feel the referee had a bad game, he should b commended for having the guts to award penalties to both teams. The penalty was calmly dispatched by Muhammad to the bottom right hand side of the corner. The score was now tied at 3-3 but not for long as Tempas almost immediately went down the other end and scored another goal, again from a penalty.

Again after regaining the lead, Tempas started to slack off and from the final attack of the match, Amin burst through the right flank and used his strength and pace to shrug off the attentions of his marker to slam a rocket of a shot through the keeper to secure a point for KFC in this hard fought match…..

Damn paiseh to those that scored the last few goals… Never evaluate long enough.. Rushing for Arsenal Liverpool match… So so so sorry….
