This is the first game of the knockout stages of the D2D Cup and honestly, its another one of those wonderful and splendid performances shown up to date. Other than the unprofessional and very, VERY bad calls made by the referee, everyone showed their mettle and proved their worth. But something is still missing...
The usual pre-game antics of the players, warming-up, passing around, catching up and joking livened up the mood of the team and maybe that produced the way of play in the first half. We started off with the usual 4-4-2 formation which everybody is comfortable and confident with. Our defence were comfortably stealing the balls from right under the noses of our opponents, midfield snaking their way around to create opprtunities for our two attackers. Perhaps the opponents were still adjusting to the game? But nonetheless, we were taking every chance possible at goal. The first goal happened not long after Fazli's encounter with the giant ang moh winger who almost took his foot along with him after a clash. A free-kick from 40 yards out taken by Muhammad, dipped at the right time for our reliable central midfielder, Azman, to head it over the distraught gk and his defenders around him. A simple set piece played to perfection. We pushed on, never stopping the runs from our flanks, long passes and through balls from our two midfielders to create more chances but stopped short by their big and burly defenders. Another chance came from an overhead pass by Muhammad set for me which i got to first with a defender on my heels. I tried to lob it over him but the gk, having a bigger surface area, jumped up and smothered the ball without effort. A few shots by Huang and Muhammad sailed nearly over the crossbar. Our opponents got the better of the referee when he awarded a penalty in favour of them after a tackle by Fazli at the edge of the penalty box. It was a tactical foul with bare contact as their striker took a dive. 1-1. Late into the first half, substitutions were made upfront and the surge of fresh and quick feet converted a simple yet excellent square pass through the centre by Muhammad found Feeq sprinting past two defenders and rammed the ball low past the keeper and into goal. 2-1. We were smelling victory.
Second half break got the team together discussing tactics and having a team hug as indicated by Azman and Dean, with me in the centre. It kept the spirit up and second half started with a similar pace as in the first. With a comeback of our ever reliable and strong centreback, Imran(akim said i love you) he towered in central defence with calvin, who made a most probably heroic move by showing his chest to a volley by the opponent striker to make goal-line clearance early in the second half. That probably woke the team up. Combined runs and passes between the full backs and the wingers almost made their way through, only to be stopped by their big defenders or nonsensical calls by the referee. One incident saw an outside-the-field tiff between Shahril and one of the opponents supporters. The opponents were now playing their game, making long passes and once in a while their switch play found the menacing ang moh striker making the run and an attempt at goal. Not long after that, Huat FC got their equaliser after a clearance went astray. Their winger crossed in the ball, only to be met by their striker and netting it in the back of our goal. Setback upon setback, right after our kickoff, their midfield found a loose ball and pumped it to their speedy winger and made it count after running down the flank and a powerful low shot to elude Bay who was already diving to make it difficult for him. 2 goals within minutes of each other. Akim got back into the game and participated upfront to add to the firepower. The remaining minutes of the game was frenzy and fast paced with us on the attacking end. A few times we almost met the back of the net, with Akim's chance in particular. Only to be disallowed by the referee that called for offside. But not in our opinion though. Bad, BAD call. In the end the whistle was blown to end a frantic half of the game. Handshakes were made, but we did not readily accept the defeat.
To summarise, i still believe we played a magnificent game. Holding and keeping the opponents at bay even though they are playing in the 3rd division and at third place holding an impressive record. Certain times the referee made very bad calls which i feel were very unfair to us, and it cost us. Having said that, we should keep up the great play and perform at the next game with a familiar opponent. maciam KAMBING! baaaaa!!
