It was Sunday again and time for yet another league match, this time against Ultras. The previous time KFC met them in MJC, KFC were unlucky to allow Ultras to come back from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 and perhaps many KFC players were thinking of going one better to gain a victory this time round. Rashid, who went on to have a solid debut, was the only fresh face for KFC, while Azhari, Farid, Helmi, Karim, Kevin, Mubarak, Shahid and Wilson were making returns to the team.

KFC started with a 4-4-2 formation, with Wilson as keeper, Firdaus, Imran, Rashid, Akim making up the back four, Amin, Muhammad, Azhari and Farhan were in midfield, while Fazli and Helmi completed the line-up with a big and small combination up front.

The match started at quite a frantic pace as both teams displayed good passing and pressuring. Both teams were taking turns to take shots at each others’ keeper as the game was surprisingly open. However, it was from a set piece from which the first goal was scored. A KFC free kick was swung in from the right by Muhammad and the ball eluded everyone and fell to Imran, who showed quick reflexes to power a header towards goal. The ball ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar before going into goal. 1-0 to KFC but the Ultras were far from demoralized. There were several good chances for the Ultras to draw level but brilliant last ditch defending and good shot-stopping managed to keep them at bay. KFC responded with a lightning quick counter attack which saw Fazli releasing Farhan down the right who managed to shrug off 2 defenders before firing a shot against the post. The experimental big and small partnership up front was having a certain level of success. Fazli, besides providing more strength was also displaying sound technique, while Helmi imposed his usual quick and nippy runs onto his new role, in the process producing a swift turn shot but the Ultra’s keeper was up to the task and gathered the ball easily.

KFC began to settle into their favored short passing game with Azhari and Muhammad dictating the tempo as the Ultras looked to break through with their counter-attacking game. One such long punt found its way to KFC’s left flank where there were two Ultra’s attacker lurking. One of them got the ball and shimmied past Imran, leaving Rashid in two minds on whether to mark the other striker or to go for the ball. The Ultra’s attacker took the most of this opening to take a shot from the edge of the area, which Wilson was unable to hold on to. 1-1 and the Ultras were back into the game.

Soon a studs up challenge from an Ultra’s player left Fazli in anguish and the customary wave of substitutions took place. KFC switched to a 4-5-1 formation in a bit to outnumber the opponents in midfield and stifle their game. Mubarak, playing in an unfamiliar left wing role, was seeing plenty of the ball but his influence was limited as there were as much as three Ultra’s players on him as soon as he receive the ball. Azman came on for Azhari and was forging an excellent understanding with, first Muhammad, and then Rahman later on. Meanwhile Amin switched to a defensive midfield role, where he worked tirelessly to protect KFC's back four. Kevin and Shahid, both coming back from a long absence, worked hard to stem the threat from the Ultra’s wingers and it was a credit to them that KFC managed to go into the break with the score still at 1-1. Half-time approached with the score still tied and expectedly, the greatest attacking threat came from Farhan, whose intelligent play caused plenty of problems for the Ultra’s defense.

The second half began with Karim replacing Farhan and playing in the lone striker role. His pace caused panic in the Ultra’s defensive ranks and he darted past two Ultra players who were forced to execute a “sandwich” tackle. The attacking momentum of the game was starting to shift towards the Ultras and most of their attacking play was now focused on the wings, Kevin in particular was being tested time and again by their left winger. Ironically, the Ultra’s next goal was to come through the centre as, yet another long punt from their backline found its way to the edge of KFC’s area. Both Imran and Wilson were going for the ball as an Ultra’s player was closing in. Wilson got to the ball first but unfortunately, his clearance hit Imran and the deflected ball fell to the Ultra’s attacker who stroked the ball into the back of the net despite the best efforts of a KFC defender to keep it out.

KFC responded by switching back to a 4-4-2 formation but it was the Ultras who scored again. A corner from the right was headed brilliantly into KFC’s goal and dejection could be seen on some of KFC’s players’ faces. A spew of substitutions then took place to instill some fresh legs to aid with KFC’s fight back.

After attaining their 2 goal lead, the Ultras were content to use the soak and strike strategy. KFC’s Azhari, Muhammad and Rahman, were beginning to string some delightful passes in midfield but the final ball was always cleared by the opposition’s defence. Farhan, together with Fazli and Helmi, tried their best to break down the Ultra’s strong, yet deceptively quick and organized defense, but to no avail. KFC could only muster long shots from Farhan and Rahman, while Rashid had a header cleared off the line. Farid then came on for Mubarak, and he showed courage beyond his age as he took on opponents nearly twice his age. The last meaningful action of the game came from the Ultras though when the ball broke down the left for their striker who executed a beautiful volley which Wilson managed to get a hand to but was ultimately unable to prevent from going into goal.

A loss for KFC who were defeated by the Ultras’ simple and effective game. But it was a good debut for Rashid, who was showing good communication skills with the rest of the defense throughout the game.
