We have met Corpus Christi before and i have always thought that the were a good side, if not better than Sporting Goras. I was impressed by their first game against us as they almost held us back to draw and in turn collecting both theirs and our first ever points in the d2d league. They chased the game, and were stung hard when two good goals got them again in search of their first point. In our case, it was our first three points.
Fast forward to now, we are facing them again, and expecting a good result since our last encounter with them after blostering confidence with our recent good showing in our past few matches. However, they were to show that 3 points were not there for free, we had to work for it.
The first half was quite of a mixed performance by the team. We held our own quite well, yet neither were we able to stamp our dominance. It was the same for Corpus Christi. They did not really threaten to score nor did we save for a few of the moments where we hurtled their defence scattering with few desperate tackles, but it seemed that the extra element of luck was not on our side. We arguably had the better of the ball in the first half, though it didnt really matter that much at all, because the chances we had werent as clear cut, but on some better days would have went in for us. Most of our chances lie from our shots outside of the penalty area, as Rafeeq would testify, as he had quite a few that day, which out of the many only one i could recall came close to dipping in below the bar.
The second half saw the two teams playing a more open game, and a scrappy one at that. Likewise as in the first half, neither team did manage to stamp their superiority over the other, and for the first time, Corpus Christi threatened us quite a bit. Their pressure rewarded them with the lead as a cross/shot/pass came bobbling through the heart of the defence before the Corpus Christi attacker pounced on to put past our hapless GK.
It was one nil to them and we responded in kind by giving good penetrating attacks on our own through ost notably our left flank. Amin made good play on the left to centre a perfect ball for Dean on the pounce. Unfortunately Dean, and the team was to be denied a goal as the ball went agonisingly close only to hit the sidenetting. I thought that one confirm goal, and was close to celebrating, but haha....
Corpus Christi didn t benefit from that let off, as minutes later, Kelvin pressed the opposing left back to square back to the centre of defence, this time, with Dean preying on the risky pass by placing the ball away from touch an into the far post of the goal.
Moments later, an attack from the left by Dean saw the ball cut back to Kelvin before chipping the ball over the keeper to grace the underside of the bar and back of the goal line. 2-1 up to Kambing and we were smelling easy peasy!
Corpus Christi had other ideas, and played a five man midfield. During this passage of the game they managed to hold on to the ball, and pinned us back at our own half. A corner awarded to them saw a towering header beating our players to the ball to put the game back to square one. it was 2-2, and the Kambings completed the round of substitutions for the second half.
We never really held a superiority over them in midfield now, but in one of our counter attacks on the left side, Helmi ran into a brick wall before managing to square the ball back to me waiting on the edge of the penalty D unmarked. Half-minded to shoot, i jinked past a closing defender, but was caught by a trailing leg. I opt for the chance to get a free kick.
The referee blew for the foul and Helmi stepped up to place/curl the ball to the edge of the goal. Kambing was turning on the style with 3 beautifully crafted goals in the second half. Soon after Corpus Christi threw everythin they had at us, and we scampered desperately to keep the ball away.
We couldnt break their spell of possession, finding it difficult to hold the ball any longer than three touches, and a moments hesitation to clear set up a chance for Corpus Christi from a set piece. The ball dipped for a goal, and it then looked destined for a draw. Personally i felt that the free kick shouldnt have been both as a foul and as a passage of play form our side to let that happen. I could have done better i know, and same for every one of us. we could have done so.
Corpus Christi sat back as we chased the game, but in the end, the 3-3 draw was a fair result for all...
