After last week’s defeat in the Cup, Kambing FC was next up against WoodlandVista, a team Kambing FC probably should have defeated the first time they met them. Firul and Rahman made returns to the team, from injury and illness respectively. Though the opposition started with only ten, nothing should be taken away from Kambing’s play in the opening exchanges. The team was producing one of its best attacking display in its short history, attacking with pace and team work, while the defence was vigilant and solid. The intense pressure paid off as a superb through ball by Muhammad found Dean, who broke the offside trap to place the ball beyond their keeper. Kambing were now leading 1-0 but the team still carried on to attack the opponent at every opportunity. Another good play down the right saw Dean playing the ball to Huang, who was ever alert to provide a clinical finish.
The opposition’s 11th player finally arrived just before Kambing’s substitutions took place, when Joharie and Firdaus too were making returns to the team. WoodlandVista, led by their marquee player (No. 3) were starting to find their way back into the game but Kambing managed to hold on to the two goal lead till the half time whistle.
The 2nd half started in contrasting fashion to the first, as both teams were now quite evenly matched and taking turns to test each others’ defense. During one such Kambing attack, Mubarak took advantage of a loose ball in midfield to fire a hopeful shot at goal. I reckon everyone was watching in anticipation as the ball seemingly took an infinity to land. Alas it was not to be as it hit the crossbar and went out for a goal kick. Following the early skirmishes, WoodlandVista’s lone striker showed good pace and quick-thinking to score an excellent goal, outwitting the Kambing defense in the process. The score was now 2-1 as WoodlandVista tried to claw their way back against a seemingly lethargic Kambing FC. WoodlandVista players, buoyed by the goal, were now displaying more hunger as they were first to the loose balls and pressing more aggressively. Kambing FC needed something to bring them back into the game, and it duly arrived in the form of Farhan, Kambing’s striker-cum-winger. A weak clearance from one of WoodlandVista’s defenders saw the ball fall to Farhan, who let the ball bounce before dispatching an instinctive shot to the bottom right corner of the goal. The goal broke Farhan’s mini goal-drought and more is sure to come from Kambing’s top scorer.
Despite Kambing restoring their two goal lead, WoodlandVista did not give up their pursuit as their no. 3 broke down the right and was seemingly through on goal but a last ditch scything tackle by Shahril halted his progress just outside Kambing’s penalty area. Perhaps considering the circumstances, it was the right thing to do at that situation. Unfortunately, it earned Shahril his second yellow card and he was sent off for the game. The free kick that followed was brilliantly taken by a WoodlandVista player as it dipped into the net, leaving Bay with no chance at all.
Down to 10 men, Kambing regrouped and prepared themselves for the oppositions’ onslaught. However, the expected fight-back did not materialize, as Kambing managed to keep hold of possession with some intelligent passing in midfield, exemplified by the excellent Man of the Match, Muhammad. The final whistle soon followed as Kambing FC, minus the Cup match, continued its good run of results in the league.
