KFC was dealt a harsh lesson in football as we tried to snap an unwanted run of 3 straight defeats. Having been positive in our 1st couple of games, almost cavalier at times only to be punished defensively, we opted for safety first approach in the 3rd game and again in this latest league encounter.
Mubarak and Joharie were substitutes in their first league appearances this season while Yazier made his first competitive appearance in outfield, albeit from the bench. Shahreen made his debut in central midfield allowing Muhammad the striker role as Farhan and Omar reprised the wingers' role. Azhari started with Rahman while Azman was the natural replacement itching to continue his fine passing display from last week's 1-3 defeat to FZE. There were no changes to the back 4 and GK with Firdaus again on the bench.
KFC endured a difficult start in a 4-5-1 formation that saw 1980s Utd FC, 2nd in the league prior to this game, having the majority of possession. KFC barely managed to stay in the game in the opening minutes. The opponent striker, who would pose problems throughout, showed his uncanny ability to drop deep and hold the ball up. On one such display, he tried a snap shot that caught Bay off guard and out of a sudden, 15 minutes after having manage to hold our opponents off, they had the lead.
The mental barrier played on my mind yet again, with thoughts of our struggle to overcome a deficit yet again so far in our last few matches, weighing heavily on the mind.
Minutes later, with a sudden surprise, we drew level. In our first corner of the game, Omar's cross was floated across the middle of our opponents' penalty box and Amin (d) pounced with a speculative left footed shot that rocketed straight into goal. The mental barrier was hopefully broken. The goal happened to be Amin (d)'s first for the team.
As the customary wave of substitutions began, Mubarak slotted in defence alongside me as Amin (d) took his rest. A long punt from the opponents' half, a clearance of a sort, came our way. Mubarak misjudged the flight of the ball and the striker was somehow suddenly breathing down our defence's necks. He took on Mubarak and Firdaus and having beaten them, found me breathing down his neck. With a little jink that caught me off balance, he prodded the ball tentatively towards goal that crawled underneath Bay's hands and his 2nd goal of the game ensured 1980s United FC had the lead yet again.
At half-time, there was a slight sense of satisfaction at the narrow scoreline but we know we are not playing well. Omar earned a yellow card from a handball shortly after the re-start. Our opponents extended their lead to 3-1 through a header from a corner and later had a commanding 4-1 lead when a cross from the right was met with another header. The game then turned into a stroll in the park as our opponents took liberty with the ball, stroking it around left to right and back again while KFC were content to sit deep.
Yazier brought some life into the scoreline at 2-4 when Muhammad's fine through pass met Yazier's overlapping run. He maintained his cool to slot the ball despite increasing pressure from the covering defender. Just as Amin (d) had with his goal, this was Yazier's first goal for the team.
Our opponents however muted our celebrations, when they regained their 3-goal advantage through a wonderful thunderous free-kick. The shot was straight down the middle above Bay and just beneath the bar. However the pace and power was of the shot was too much to overcome. There was still a nagging feeling that Bay could perhaps have done better, as this was the 2nd time he had been beaten this way, if memory serves correctly. But Bay did his part in the game as he still kept the scoreline down.
Towards the end of the match, it was 2-6 when we failed to clear the ball in our penalty box and from the resulting melee, the opponents pounced on the loose ball on the edge of the 6-yard box to ensure a hefty winning margin.
While KFC has been spirited and competitive in their previous three league matches so far, we found ourselves with a much formidable opponent this time around. The present league campaign is clearly proving to be too many steps forward in KFC's short history. With 14 games still to play, KFC would do well to break their 4-game losing streak and soon. Nevertheless, I am still optimistic we would turn the corner around to earn some creditable results. Now let me call Vidic and Ferdinand...
