It has been 3 months since we last played a friendly. In view of the National Day long weekend, we were instead afforded the opportunity to play on Friday evening, perfect timing to kick off the holiday period.
In a game of missed opportunities that ultimately cost us, we blew a 3-0 lead as the opponents capitalized on defensive errors to share the spoils. There were many new faces today and they all truly impressed, including two from my other team, and it just goes to show how much KFC can really be expanded if we really want to aggressively push for more such good players. We even had a 3rd GK today, who has played for us before on a couple of occasions.
All 3 goals from KFC came from through passes as Amin grabbed a brace with Farhan's strike sandwiched in between. The opening minutes started cautiously for both teams but the game stepped up when Farhan and Amin came on for Karim and Kevin respectively. The pace of our players offensive-wise suddenly tripled even as the quality of our play improved. With Muhammad doing much of the orchestrating in midfield, Helmi not afraid to take his man down the left flank, debutant Hilman patrolling superbly in front of our defence, Amin's awesome quick burst with the ball, and the raw power of Farhan, the immense potential was clear for all to see.
Karim and Mubarak spurned their chances, among the many on the night, but we finally took the lead. My pass for Amin led to the opening goal of the match about midway through the 1st half. Amin took his shot well. Some build-up play on the left flank involving Helmi and Muhammad led to a chance being crafted for Farhan, who increased his tally for the team to 30 goals, finishing easily from close range as we go 2-0 at half-time. The message at half-time was simple, keep the ball and pass it.
However we were understandably excited to rack up more goals. Disappointingly, we failed to score more than we should have. We did surged to 3-0 when Hilman, a player whom I have been impressed with for a long time since I played with him in my other team, supplied a typical through lobbed pass right from the halfway line to find Amin who burst inside, played a one-two with Kelvin and scored from a narrow angle near to the touchline.
As Azmi and Ashraf also made their debuts, they also excelled, we were playing the adventurous football and if this had led to more goals, I would not have mind. Instead a couple of misplaced backpasses, first from Mubarak and later from Shahid, saw our opponents reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Unbelievably, given the irony that I wanted us to keep the ball, my poor pass was intercepted in the middle of the half. When that led to the opponent counter-attack, Mubarak conceded a free-kick, a poor call by the referee actually, who seemed to be somewhat biased, but that is as far reserved a comment as I could give. From the free-kick we managed to clear it but another poor pass from our players led to the ball being played on the left. The cross played in floated all over KFC's defenders and the opponent at the back post was able to head in to tie the score at 3-3.
As we recoiled from this set-back, I did not sense much in the form of disappointment, maybe this being a friendly, but I for one was not that happy to let a 3-0 lead dissipate so awfully. It did not help that I had played the entire game, the only among all the players other than Mubarak. We did search in vain for the winning goal but one of the misses of the season, by a player who shall not be named (this does not change the fact he is a committed player for the team and one of the most determined), was among the many chances we failed to convert and in the end, the game ended in an entertaining draw.
