Our previous two encounters with this team ended in 2-2 and 1-1 draws and so this third round have that added incentive of finally a victory for either team. The start of this game was very delayed however as our players arrived rather late including our hensem captain Rahman who is supposed to be reviewing this game but has a battle with school. Okok, on to proper match review.
We welcome Azhari back to the team. :-)
For a relatively veteran team, they are not as organised and disciplined as most veteran teams I have seen but compared to our team, they were bigger in size, which made the Kent Ridge field, bigger when we played a similar-sized team as us last time around, much smaller last Sunday.
We have pace however and with plenty of nimble and tricky players (Omar and Farhan) as well as the aggressive Kelvin and hardworking Huang leading the line, we were in for a chance.
Our opponents dropped deep defensively relying on their faster younger players to carry the ball forward deep into our half and that caused plenty of problems almost throughout the 1st half. One such foray resulted in Azmi, as I myself did a couple of weeks ago, failing to clear the ball right in front of our goalpost, and the midfielder made no mistake to pounce (have a feeling of deja vu as I think I typed similar words in that match review) and shot powerfully past Bay.
They had their lead but we were not giving up. Instead we had plenty of shots from all angles even from the halfway line when my fluke of a free-kick struck the crossbar. I tried to add my niche of scoring from corners (self-flattering again) to go forward on the many corners we won but the opponents' taller height meant they won the 1st ball often.
They doubled their lead late into the 1st half. Another carrier / dribbler ran at our defence with the ball and caused chaos when his low cross across goal was picked on by, I think, another midfielder, and his low shot, though slow-paced carried enough power to trickle past Bay. However, the ball bounced off the upright into the path of the unfortunate Azmi, and in his scramble to clear, could only send the ball back into the net.
At half-time, we were very satisfied with the result because we were playing well.
We were all guns blazing in the 2nd, as the opponents chose to protect their lead with the occasional counter-attacks and long shots.
Many of Bay's goal-kicks were good and powerful to initiate some of our attacks but we were failing to control the possession after winning the 1st ball and even if we won, we ran into a stone wall when we tried manfully to run at their defence the way they did at us in the 1st half.
We were also doing well to get behind the defence too especially on the flanks with myself, starting the 2nd half at left-back, supporting the attack whenever we could. Rahman also tried to put through the attack with many passes but he would later complained that our players were not helping to pick his pass up.
Late into the game, we finally got the goal we wanted. Omar's free-kick just managed to sneak in under the GK's arms. Even as we tried to rally to snag the equalizing goal, time ran out for us.
Yet again, we were satisfied in defeat. We played very well today and as a team, we worked hard for one another as each individual chipped in with a very good effort. That is a great strength for our team to call upon for our future games.
