We had an enjoyable game today albeit against a team which loaned 2 of our players (Rahman and Firul) as they could only play with 9 of their own. This game also marked our recent addition to the team jerseys; our own numbers!

Based on the number of different scorers, excluding the superb own goal from yours truly, we sure have a variety of players who can score and this certainly bodes well that we have firepower from all over the pitch.

Before the match started, I felt we were in great shape, not surprising given the quality players we had at our disposal, and it showed when we struck shots after shots, especially from long range, at our opponents who seemed to be playing with a stand-in GK.

The pressure paid off when Farhan shot inside the penalty box which the GK could only fumbled and allowed the ball to invitingly fall to a predatory Huang to bundle in the ball despite pressure from Firul. 1-0

Out of the blue, our opponents decided to step up their own pressure and they equalized after the striker had pounced on our indecision to clear the ball, seemingly after an innocuously punt into our half, and got himself through on goal to easily beat a defenceless Wilson. 1-1

It got worse after Azmi and myself had been occupied with man-marking our own respective opponents but a 3rd player did a surging run ala Scholes/Lampard/Gerrard to bore his way through our defence to easily take into stride a lobbed ball over our defence, it would have been offside if his two team-mates marked by us had attempted to take on the ball, but the 3rd man tuck away the goal and our opponents have had the cheek to take the lead. 1-2

Were we deprived of poetic justice? Based on our chances, we had enough to win the match but we were now 2-1 down.

As our team probably got a little impatient and desperate for that equalizer, I tentatively struck a long ball forward supposedly for Farhan but my goalbound effort inexplicably went over and away from the GK's reach into the now empty net which Rafeeq safely tuck the ball in for the equalizer. 2-2

At half-time, we swapped Es and Karim for Rahman and Firul. There was nothing much we can do really, I would have preferred our own players playing for us. But we needed to have a proper 11-on-11 game.

Our firepower revved up a few notches and Farhan took centrestage to put our team in the lead after a typical ferocious drive past the GK. We have the lead again. 3-2

We were truly in cruise control but the referee then decided to put one over us when he awarded a foul for our opponents in a dangerous position. It was given against Azmi for jostling unfairly with an opponent though the ball was definitely out of reach for either anyway as I was covering behind to head it away. However, the opponent could not get his shot on target.

That fired us up and we extended our lead after Syafiq had crossed for no one at the far post on the left flank but Helmi was determined as he chased it down and lay it off Amin who was waiting just outside the box and he rifled it ever so sweetly into the right bottom corner of the net. Amin's 1st goal for the team. Well done! 4-2

Just as we thought we could make more mincemeat out of our opponents' seemingly inevitable lost cause, I gave them a lifeline when I headed another of the opponents' long punt downfield into our own net when Wilson was caught out of position as he had rushed forward at my command. I take the blame. On hindsight, this was another valuable lesson for me playing in central defence. 4-3

Farhan then extended our lead for the 2nd time as Helmi again got himself involved with the goal. After a Firul throw-in, Helmi again lay off for another player, this time for Farhan, and the current team top scorer scored his 2nd goal of the match. 5-3

Helmi finally rounded up his impressive individual effort with a goal of his own as lacklustre defending from a corner failed to close him down and he had all the time in the world to pick his spot which was too centre on target perhaps but powerful enough to beat everyone in the midst of a crowded goalmouth area. Final score 6-3

There are a couple at the top of my mind which I think we can take and learn from this game, apart from knowing we have scorers all over the pitch. 1st, our opponents were definitely under-strength but the manner we conceded the goals were silly. 2nd, we may have extended our winning streak as we picked up momentum for the upcoming tournament, but it was too bad some of the players involved in the tournament could not come today. Nevertheless, all in all, we can take heart from an enjoyable afternoon game of soccer.

Most of the time, these 2 players below get the camera. I don't know why.
