playing on a wet sunday morning was never an easy task but on this occasion, it prove to be the exact opposite.
15min before the game commence, the sky opened up and the team was soaked while taking some practice shots and passing.. i joking commented that we are playing in England EPL as it always seemed to be raining over there too.. we were wearing the red jersey while the opponents were decked out in blue.. a preview for the big match today Chelsea vs Liverpool?
from the first whistle, our team was like totally dominating the play against our hapless opponents. Waves after waves of attacks was being directed down the flanks with the wizardry skill of Farhan and Omar stretching the fullbacks to their limits. Syafiq was employed as a attacking midfielder and he was a revelation in his new role. Running behind the static backline, he delivered plenty of good crosses and it was a matter of time before the goals came banging in.
Surprisingly, the first goal came from a very unlikely source. After good play by our midfield, a cross was send in and from the resulting mayham, Huang opened the scoring for us when he diverted the ball high into the net within the six yard box. yes, it was surprising because today, Huang was employed as a LEFT BACK, yes, our left fullback who abandon his post and followed his attacking instinct into the box to knock the ball into the goal. 1-0
after this great opening however, the team endured a frustating spell with wasted shots on goals as well as wayward crosses. Din and Co upfront was chasing down every ball, giving the tired opposition defence no time to catch their breath. however, their keeper stood tall and managed to twart Din and Co efforts time and again.
the second goal came from a setpiece and it was a goal of the highest caliber. from a corner, the ball was floated into the middle of the penalty box and Azhari calmly used his chest to cushion the ball before burying it into the bottom left of the goal with a swift volley that left the keeper rooted to the spot. 2-0 and it was the first goal as well for for our long serving midfield general. Azhari den added to his tally with a well taken shot from outside the penalty box with the defence once again at sixes and sevens after a mere 10min to increase the scoreline to 3-0.
at this point of time, it musted be added that OUR defence was really sleeping.. I for one, was simply walking around my penalty box WITHOUT a touch of the ball since kickoff.. yes, tht how boring a keeper life can be.. and soon, i got my first touch of the ball when akim backpassed to me.. =\
3-0 and it was going to be halftime soon, yet our team didnt not ease up on the pressure. more combined trickery from omar, followed by slick passings from Amin, Azhari, Farhan and Syafiq opened up the box for Din to add his name to the scoresheet when he slotted in the ball from close range. 4-0 and the game is as good as over when the referee blew for half time.
the start of the second half proved to be just as exciting (or boring in my case). despite the increased confidence of the opponents, they were still firmly pegged to their own half by our superior midfield and attackers. it got to the point when our formation was changed from a 4-4-2 to a 2-4-4 as our fullbacks, Huang and Rahman, frequently joined in the attacks, leaving akim and azmi near the center of the pitch strolling around. this proved to be SLIGHTLY dangerous as the opponent managed to string a few decent passes down our left flank, but our stable center backs had no problems dealing with them, always managing to clear or guide the ball to safely while i had the good fortune to touch the ball again when a weak lob/chip/pass was attempted by their lone #14 striker. =\
after that, it was business as usual as we poured into their half, trying to find goal number #5. Azman came late for the match but soon made his pressence felt with a couple of good shots while Syafiq had a couple of go at the keeper too. Even our rightback Rahman was operating near their penalty box and he rose to occasion by weaving into the box and NOTHING.. a combination of wet ground, too many defenders in the small area as welll as moment of hesitation robbed him of his moment of glory as the ball dribbled out for a corner.. Syafiq continued to put in hard works with plenty of runs and intelligence passes that opened up their defence but again, the keeper helped to keep the scoreline down to single digit.
Goal #5 came when after a myriad of defence splitting passes send Syafiq scurrying down into the right side of the penalty box. A good cross from him found Farhan near the top of the box and Farhan had the luxury of choosing his spot before sweetly burying the ball into the chosen position for goal #5.
mercifully, the referee soon blew for full time and our team had a good time congratulating each other for a fine job. truth to be told, the opposite was a weak team. it was like Man Utd vs West Brom the previous week, with us being better in fitness, technical skills and more importantly, learning from our previous mistakes of holding the ball too long and not releashing early enough.
all in all, a great game on a wet sunday. keep up the good work and start on a new winning streak!
PS: ya.. due to our great 10 outfield players who prevented me from touching the ball, i managed to keep our team second clean sheet too .. =P
