I must admit, I was surprised by the scoreline especially at half-time after an unassailable 5-0 lead. We were playing the more direct football but we were making use of the strength we have; pace and panache. So it was that 5 similar crafted goals ripped apart blue's defence, some critics will say it was route one football but hey, it works.

Credit to the scorers, Dean, Farhan and Rafeeq, for leading the offence. This allowed us to go into the 2nd half and focus on the football I wanted them to play.

And in the 2nd half, the rest of the players were allowed to shine. It was revealed the maestro in midfield, as Helmi, making his debut for the team, who was absolutely brilliant in the middle of the park. True we did not score at all (give blue some face la... just kidding!) but honestly, Helmi would be a useful addition to the team if he wants to play regularly with us. Another debutant, Andy, was also allowed to prosper in the 2nd half as we sat back and allowed blue to attack us. He was a monster in central defence alongside the ever impressive Azmi. Another welcome addition! We also welcome back Shafirul who showed us what we are missing at left-back.

I was a little disappointed with the two goals we conceded but at least we played better football in the 2nd half.

Huang and Omar scored for blue. Huang headed in a good cross from Rahman while Omar scored the goal of the game with a well-executed lob from outside the box.

We should not read too much into the scoreline. The fact was that in the 1st half, we did not play the better football. Having said that, the blue team did not exactly show any desire to score as well.

They were stroking the ball around and holding on to it far too often, Syafiq, understandably being the winger, being the guilty one. Kelvin, our team in-form striker was left foraging for chances on his own, as blue's midfield failed to penetrate our defence. Azhari and Rahman commanded the midfield well though. Omar was a menace down the right flank, having a battle with Shafirul! That was a marvellous sight especially in the second half. Justin and Fazli were the giants in defence, true our team's pace caught them out, but I felt the blue team weren't exactly helping them out.

At the end of the day, I'm sure both teams enjoyed the game. It was a rare opportunity to know the team better, especially for players like Shafirul and Fazli (the team's first members) who have been away from the team for a while. It also gave us a chance to see how we square up to our own players. I was especially looking forward to test myself against the giant defenders (I lost). Later on I tried to tackle both Azhari and Rahman, I won my fair share of the battle this time. LOLz. Neverthless, the next game promises so much more!

THE BLUE TEAM

Football is a game of passion. Of devotion. Of commitment. Its a game of two- sides, two halves, and two teams. A tale of differing perspectives, differing plots and stories. But rarely, it is a game of many chances. A chance rarely re-manifests during the 90 mins on the pitch.”

DIGGING OUT FROM THE HOLES WE DUG

If the game can be told in just one statement, the scoreline would serve to be the worst case of injustice. Like the plunge of Brutus’ dagger into Caesar’s heart, the game tells of a story, more complex than a one-liner can ever tell. Defeat is too harsh a word to be used in my review of the game, as I do not see the scoreline being the focal point of the game.

It was a bright sunny day, good for football, but as the team photographer complains that the heat was intense. For the players on the field though, the heat was probably the last thing on their mind. It was a friendly match but no one came to lose. I would not run through the team list as Mus has already done so, but we do welcome back Fazli and newcomer Justin, both of whom were ushered to the important role in the heart of defence, alongside Goalkeeper Yaszer whom had appeared for the team before.

The game started bright enough in the first ten minutes. Both teams started brightly, making decent runs, passes and incisions on both sides of the pitch. However, the Blues lacked that every bit of concentration needed to nullify their strong pacy attack. Dean was quick to pounce on an error by our keeper and broke the deadlock early on in the match. The team wasn’t eager to concede an early goal, and self-doubt began to creep in everyone, particularly Yaszier after the horrendous error. The team then failed to gel and discipline began to fade as our ranks were very much broken. As the goals started to come like waves, heads began to droop, hearts started to sink. At least mine was. The team couldn’t hold the ball up front, and Fazli suggested Azhari to move up there to hold the ball. Huang was to drop down to midfield. Though we needed people to hold the ball up front, the midfield having lost Azhari lost shape and stability. The last time we counted, five goals had already plundered their way through.

CHINS UP LADS!

There was much to do, and soon it was the end of the half. As players on both sides mingled and related experience in the game, sub-consciously, everyone in BLUE knew the game was lost. I knew that. WE knew that. But I do not care about the game. Lets detach ourselves from the scoreline. Detach ourselves from the fact that we’re losing. We’ve got a battle ahead of us, and its not with the Red Team. It’s the battle from within that we need to win.

But rarely, it is a game of many chances. A chance rarely re-manifests during the 90 mins on the pitch.”

We have already lost 45 minutes, and we won’t be getting it back. But now we have another 45 minutes to go. Lets make this ours! Its now, or never. The team was told to focus on the center and concede the flanks if needed to, in order to squeeze and crowd them out in the centre. However, we didn’t need to as the REDs chose to sit back and go for the counter, giving us the opportunity to take the upper hand.

A LIFT TO THE TEAM

During times like this we need our senior players to shine. Everyone in midfield was giving the fight that we so needed in the first half. More players showed more initiative and hunger. Everyone did. Players whom were lacking in this department was given ‘ENCOURAGEMENT’. Even the Yaszer jumped in the bandwagon, evident from his enthusiastic jump he had. We had the desire and belief. We are out to exorcise some the ghosts from the first half.

Omar showed great technical skill and fighting spirit to fend off swarms of the opponent with the help of Shafi from the right flank. In one instance, it bore fruit. Having pressured the Red team, the Red defence gave a stray ball on the right side of the flank. A good quick combination from me and Omar saw him beating three opposing players to the ball before releasing me on the right flank with plenty of time and space. Looking up I saw Huang the only option for attack. who was still someway behind. I aimed to put the ball in front of him and I did so, though credit must be given to him for making contact to the ball to put Wilson off. His header went through the legs of the opposing keeper. We have got our first goal.
I substituted myself late on in the game as I begin to suffer tell-tale signs of a cramp. Rafeeq came on for me and soon after, Omar scored from far out with a Glorious lob that beat Wilson. It was good play from perhaps our best player on the field.

Although we had come short of victory in a 5-2 scoreline, I can safely say we had a good game. It isn’t so much for the score, but how we managed to carve out a respectable account for ourselves that matters.
