I wish that somebody will start to do his part for reviewing matches because apparently I'm carrying blogging responsibilites on my own...
Another 2-2 draw means we are on a 3-match unbeaten run. We could have even won this game but the opponents had so much strength in depth, meaning they could call upon so many reserves, that we lost out on the opportunity. Nevertheless, based on the football itself, a draw is the fairest result.
The first half of the first half started brightly for us. We had them on the backfoot quite often as our young offence were faster than the ageing team we were facing. It was also apparent that our opponents were somewhat cautious, letting us play the football, but that is not to say they did not muster any offensive threats of their own. My new central defensive partner and debutant Mustakim, coincidentally almost similarly named as me, held the defensive line with me, covering much ground when I was beaten. Credits to the full-backs Wilson and Shafi too for displaying much defensive acumen.
We got the lead from Farhan who ran at the defence managing to beat 3 defenders. There were other glorious opportunities but, as always, we started to tire out during the second half of the first half as we had exerted ourselves. This inevitably caused problems our defence but as mentioned, the defence held our own. We went into the break with a slender 1 goal lead.
It was obvious we were missing a midfield general, someone in the mould of Azhari, Azman or that somebody who is supposed to be reviewing this but was playing striker today.
So in a tactical switch for the 2nd half, I reverted Rahman from striker to the holding midfield role, replaced Farhan with Muhd Nur who took Rahman's place and debutant left-footed Es took Syafiq's place out wide.
The midfield was stabilised this half. But we were still the more tired team. Instructions passed on to play it slow, keep hold of the ball and pass it around.
It worked to a certain extent as we became more patient in building up play but when our opponents gradually build momentum of their own, they scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. They could have been avoided really.
The 1st goal was crafted when our midfield failed to support our own throw-in deep in our own half, surrendering possession back to our opponent half. A long punt downfield almost immediately towards our penalty box allowed their lone striker to challenge Azmi, who had replaced Mus. I felt Bei came out too early and the striker managed to prod in the ball through his legs.
Our opponents were already the dominant team. They won a free-kick outisde the top corner of the penalty box but Bei's poor positioning allowed the ball to sail across the face of goal into the net for a 2-1 deficit.
That spurred us even more to gain a result, we did not want to be beaten, so we pushed for the equaliser but apart from a few moments of panic caused by our offence, the opponents' defence were simply too tough a wall to break down.
It was somewhat more fortuitious when Rahman earned a penalty after some good play.
Time was running out. Syafiq stepped up and drove the ball slightly right towards the middle as the GK went the other way. 2-2 draw the final score.
